BALTIMORE, MD — There are plenty of things to love about Baltimore. In fact, Forbes named it one of the 10 coolest cities to visit. The magazine released the list Monday, putting the spotlight on smaller urban areas like Savannah and San Antonio in addition to Charm City.
Forbes prefaced the list by stating that “small can be beautiful” and noted revitalization projects played a part in the selections.
Melissa Biggs Bradley, who founded the boutique travel firm Indagare, told Forbes why she thinks Baltimore is an up-and-coming destination.
“Despite its history as one of the country’s most important ports, Baltimore has been overlooked,” Biggs Bradley told Forbes. “But now, with the new Sagamore Pendry Baltimore hotel, a burgeoning arts scene and the planned Under Armour campus, Baltimore’s moniker of Charm City is becoming a reality.”
The hotel, which opened in March 2017, has transformed the pier in Fells Point into a luxury experience, with a waterside pool, whiskey bar and topnotch restaurant in the mix.
Partnering in the endeavor is Sagamore Development, the company majority-owned by Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank that is working to revitalize Port Covington as well.
“Baltimore’s art scene is also on the rise: Local artist Amy Sherald recently unveiled Michelle Obama’s portrait for the National Portrait Gallery and now sits on the board of the Baltimore Museum of Art,” Biggs Bradley told Forbes. “This year, the museum is showcasing such pioneering exhibitions as ‘Moon Dust,’ an illumination installation work by Spencer Finch, who is known for his works at New York’s High Line Park and the National September 11 Memorial and Museum.”
Forbes did not mention all the artistic gems that Charm City has to offer, from MICA to the Visionary Arts Museum to Artscape to Light City.
